Pusat Transformasi Bandar (UTC) Perak in the making. Super Kinta no more!
One time ago, we were told that Pusat Transformasi Bandar or Urban Transformation Centre (UTC) Perak will be launched somewhere in the month of December 2012. We were curious about its current status and decided to check it out early yesterday morning. What we saw was simply breathtaking!
Pusat Transformasi Bandar (UTC) Perak: The exterior
In the old days, this place was once more affectionately known among the locals as Super Kinta. During those golden years, Super Kinta was a huge departmental store and it was one of the biggest in the country in terms of floor space if we're not mistaken. We do not have any photos of its old front façade in our possession but we found one belonging to someone else at Flickr and here it is down below.
Yes, that was how it looked like back in the past. Now take a look at what we saw yesterday!
Yes, it indeed breathtaking! The new exterior is giving new, fresh breath of life to what can be considered as a dying landmark for the City of Ipoh. We do not know who is behind the design and construction work but they have done a marvellous job!
We were told by somebody there that the original plan is to have the whole new place go up and running in the month of December 2012 but a few unforeseen delays in its developments have forced the authorities to postpone its original launching date to another suitable date and time, possibly somewhere in the first quarter of 2013. No tentative date was given to us but we were hinted that Pusat Transformasi Bandar (UTC) Perak might be launched in January 2013.
Pusat Transformasi Bandar (UTC) Perak: The interior
While the exterior no longer resembles the old Super Kinta façade that most Ipohites knew, the interior remains more or less the same. The old staircase is still there but instead of providing access to Super Kinta, it will provide Ipohites access to the all new Pusat Transformasi Bandar (UTC) Perak once it is officially open. Even the old escalators are still there too but the mechanisms behind it are currently being replaced with something new.
The old ceremonial plaque that marked the historic official opening of Pasar Besar Ipoh (Ipoh Central Market) back in 1983 is still there and we hope that it will remain there because it is a part of Ipoh's history.
January 3rd 2013 Update: We visited the newly opened UTC Perak yesterday evening. Managed to take some new interior and exterior photos of UTC Perak too.
January 21st 2013 Update: A tall, towering billboard has been erected nearby UTC Perak.
